I had never received any mail from Denmark.... and time was running out, because as it was widely noticed, after 400 years of letter delivery in the Kingdom of Denmark, Post Nord, its postal operator, terminated its letter delivery services, and as such no more stamp issues from that particular operator are expected to be seen in the future (although I read somewhere that a private operator will provide the letter distribution service in the future).
Thanks to my Flying Dutchman friend and his son I was able to check my in extremis Denmark entry in the list of countries and I could not be more thankful for that, the more so since Danish mail prices were quite high.
So, Hartelijk dank, Eric and Amir for your kind and generous suprise, which I so much loved.
Quite a bunch of stamps on the letter:
- The first two, on the left corner, were issued on 08NOV1979 in the Music anniversaries series.
The brown 1.10 Krone honours Jacob Gade (1879-1963), a Danish violinist and composer, and it seems that the notes on the score behind the violin image in the stamp are from one of his compositions entitled "Jalousie".
The 1.60 blue stamp is dedicated to the memory of August Bournonville (1805-1979), a Danish ballet master, being issued on the first centenary of his death.
- The blue 100 øre stamp of the wavy lines definitive series was issued on 30MAR83
- The 1,20 Krone stamp with a Devil's Bolete (Boletus satanas), was issued on 16NOV1978, as part of a two stamp set themed on Mushrooms. The companion stamp has a face value of 1 Krone and depicts the Common Morel (Morchella esculenta).
- The 18 Krone definitive stamp of the Coat of Arms series was issued on 10JAN1985
- Finally, the four stamp booklet was issued on 21MAR1996, on the occasion of the 1996 Olympics that took place in Atlanta, USA.
The 3,75; 4,75; 5 and 9,50 Krone stamps are illustrated with images of disciplines in which Denmark athletes presumably competed, namely wheel chair basketball (in the Paralympics event) swimming, sailing and cycling.
The postmark was applied at Taastrup, a suburb of Copenhagen.
As a final note on the termination of letter distribution services by Post Nord, let me point you to a recent entry on the ever interesting "O FIlatelista" blog, maintained by Portuguese Philatelist Mario Paiva, where I have learned that the Danish operator has actually issued a celebratory postmark for the last day of letter distribution in the country.
